Artist Steve Locke abandons his attempt to create a memorial to enslaved people in Boston.

July 15, 2019

The African-American artist proposed to create a sculpture depicting the slave auctions that would have been installed outside Faneuil Hall. Although the idea received support from Mayor Marty Walsh, it was opposed by the Boston Branch NAACP and others for not going through a selection process. Locke also announces his plan to leave Boston, declaring, “This city has broken my heart for the last time. I’m putting my house on the market and getting the hell out of here.”
